Li Auto Accelerates In-House Development as Automakers Enter a New Era of Self-Developmen
Sep 10, 2026 234

Li Auto is accelerating its in-house technology strategy, with self-developed batteries, chips and range extenders gradually becoming available across its vehicle lineup.

On September 7, Li Auto announced that its self-developed 5C battery has already been introduced in models including the L8, L6 and i8. The upcoming 2026 Li i6 is expected to feature the company’s self-developed 5C battery across the entire lineup, with deliveries scheduled to begin in November. Other models, including the MEGA, i9 and L9, are also expected to transition to Li Auto’s battery technology progressively.

Unlike traditional vertically integrated manufacturing, Li Auto’s battery strategy combines proprietary technology with external manufacturing. Public information indicates that Sunwoda and CALB may participate in battery production, while Li Auto recently invested RMB 2.65 billion in Sunwoda Power, further strengthening their cooperation.

Beyond batteries, Li Auto is also developing its own intelligent-driving chip, Mach M100, and has introduced a self-developed and self-produced range extender.

Li Auto is not alone. BYD has long pursued deep vertical integration across batteries, motors, electronic control systems and other core components, while NIO, XPeng and Xiaomi are also developing proprietary intelligent-driving chips.

The trend reflects a broader transformation in the global automotive industry. As electric vehicles become increasingly software- and AI-driven, automakers are seeking greater control over critical technologies to improve system integration, optimize performance and reduce supply-chain risks.

Rather than replacing suppliers entirely, this shift is creating a more diversified industry structure, where automakers develop strategic core technologies while continuing to cooperate with specialized suppliers.

The global automotive industry may not be entering an era of complete self-manufacturing, but it is clearly moving toward greater technological independence and deeper vertical integration.
